Progress Update Banner 2026-05-30

Last week we released Thrive 1.1.0 in an apparently fairly stable state, as the number of bug reports was relatively low. We are still very interested in hearing all of your feedback!

Besides a few bug fixes and code-cleanups, the theme of this week appears to be UI and visual updates. First of all, the cell membrane graphics have received a significant visual upgrade. In particular, they should look much more distinct from each other. Secondly, the cell part tooltips in the editor have been expanded, which is particularly helpful for placing organelles to help you survive oxygen with the recently limited slider. Also, the editor “you are not meeting environmental tolerance requirements” warning no longer overestimates how much you need to adjust your tolerances.

There were 2 new features done this week: colony members now try to attach to a still-existing colony member rather than totally detaching if a key connecting cell is removed, and we now at last how fossilisation for multicellular species, which is not a very often used feature, but still an important one for the overall Thrive experience, and now it works for multicellular as well as the microbe stage. And as the final small fix, the icon for the spore germination action added last week was slightly improved.

Meanwhile, over on the development forums there was a brief discussion on the code architecture for Multicellular auto-evo.

So look below for the full progress list, and we'll see you next week for more!

Programming

  • New Devbuild available to our Patreon Supporters:
    • Added tolerance and a few other stats to the organelle tooltips
    • Detached colony members now try to re-parent to a nearby still existing member rather than always totally exiting the colony when their connecting cell was removed
    • Implemented fossilisation for multicellular species
    • Reduced minimum selectable GUI scale to 60%
    • Doubled lifetime of radioactive chunks
    • Made the MP bar show one more decimal to avoid confusing rounding scenarios
    • Fixed external organelle positions not updating to match their physical positions when a cell grew
    • Updated membranes with new textures and shader changes
    • Made save list items only load their data when about to become visible rather than all loading immediately
    • Updated germination action icon
    • Changed tolerance warning text to give the minimum needed change to become tolerant rather than the change the preferred value would need
    • The game news feed now uses HTTPS to load more securely
    • Slightly tweaked when world queued actions are triggered for future safety
    • Fixed the slightly confusing way the fossilisation dialog was internally constructed
    • Fixed moving a cell in multicellular not updating the specialization display
    • Removed Windows-style new lines from our error dialog to avoid double line changes from appearing
    • Updated some code to use a new collection initializer syntax
    • Reimplemented as our 2D spinners as shaders rather than rotating nodes as those were hard to make in Godot 4
    • Fixed our component access safety checking mode and fixed some missing access markings in game systems
    • Updated test SDK
    • Updated translations
  • Questions and answers on how the code for Multicellular auto-evo should work.

Graphics

  • Visuals for membranes updated. The texture for Calcium Carbonate was replaced with an entirely new one resembling overlapping plates. In general, all textures are more prominent, though with a transparency towards the middle of the cell that depends on the rigidity slider. new_membrane_visuals.png
  • Updated icon for the Spore Germination action with greater line thickness.

Gameplay

  • The lifetime of radioactive chunks has been doubled so you can make use of them more.
  • The environmental tolerances editor warning now tells you exactly how much you need to adjust your tolerances to meet the requirements at your current flexibility, rather than the amount you need to move to match the Patch's value exactly.
  • Added more information to the cell part tooltips in the editor: Environmental Tolerance effects, and approximations of produced rotation force/thrust (replacing a “speed” value) new_cellpart_tooltips.png
